pH is a measure of the acid/alkaline characteristics in body chemistry. The body should maintain a mid-range of pH equilibrium, being neither too acid nor too alkaline. A widely accepted body of medical thought believes that most illnesses are quiescent until a shift in the body pH occurs.
Alkaline Shift
Body pH shifts when there is a deficiency in essential nutrients causing an alternation in the digestive system. Often, the modern diet contributes to the shifting of the pH to the alkaline end of the equation because of the depleted foods that we eat on a daily basis. A more acid environment is needed, and this change in pH will slow down the digestion and the assimilation of nutrients, which begins to reverse the anabolic chemistry leading to the start of the degenerative process, making the body susceptible to disease.
Alkaline Nuts and Bolts
The pH in digestion should be more acidic. However, whenever there is a shift toward the alkaline direction, the body is not able to break down proteins to release amino acids or properly assimilate minerals–particularly inorganic minerals. For example, the minerals we derive from plants have been absorbed from the earth during growth and are converted upon our consumption of them, allowing our bodies to convert them into useful nutrients. Garden vegetables that are not properly raised can become “deteriorated” due to depleted soils, for instance, and this slows down the digestion of these vegetables.
Fermentation
Also, in an alkaline environment, fermentation of carbohydrates and sugars will begin. Many illnesses, particularly cancers, expand when a fermentative state exists and this, in turn, attracts bacteria, fungus, and parasites.
Just as in wine-making, fermentation requires a lot of oxygen, so it starts to compete for the same oxygen that our body’s cells require for their own growth and sustenance. It’s no coincidence then that diseased patients have unusually high amounts of anaerobic (low oxygen) cells. So, the deadly combination of oxygen-starved cells plus a shift in pH toward the alkaline end of the scale becomes a rich breeding ground for the development of cancers.
The Solution: Detox Programs
Dr. Jacob Swilling of the Alternative Cancer Centers in Costa Mesa, CA believes there is “extensive evidence that bacteria, viruses and cancers thrive in anaerobic fermentative states.” Due to the depletion of vitamin C and amino acids, there is a breakdown of the cell membrane which becomes weakened to such an extent that bacteria, parasites, toxic substances–particularly toxic metals–can cross the membrane in a way they could never have done in a healthy cell. These harmful invaders are relentless in their attempts to penetrate the weakened membranes to reach the fermentation, which is their natural food and required for their development. So, a good colon cleanse plan is required.
So, the more toxic the body, the more alkaline the body’s pH becomes and the more susceptible it is to disease. This is why Dr. Swilling and many others believe detoxing is absolutely imperative to reduce the body’s toxic overload and return its pH to an acid state.
